Title: The Entertainer
Comment: The famous lion‘s head from the intro of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movies (Link) is painted on a former wooden pallet. Above its head the words „Panem & Circenses“ (bread & circuses) are written.
In school pupils learn about how the emperors of Ancient Rome were able to keep the mob from questioning the political decisions of their rulers: Bread & Circuses. We tend to laugh about these savage people who were so easy to control by fulfilling their primitive needs. But are we much better and more civilized then they were? Of course we are not going to a coloiseum to see barbarian fights – because we dont have to. In every appartment we have our own small coloiseum: a television. It fullfills our most primitive needs with shows where people embarrasse themselves or movies, which are violent – so we can „relax“ and forget about the troubling world outside. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer`s lion represents the modern mass media and how they deliver exactly what we want: bread & circuses.
